Fire Safety and its importance for businesses

Fire safety and prevention

Fire safety is a risk of the highest importance in any situation, but in a workplace environment, the safety of employees, visitors or customers is paramount in addition to the protection of your building.

Having fire protection systems and preparation procedures in place are a legal requirement for business owners and have to be implemented to make employees aware of the safety processes and what to do in the event of a fire.

It is the responsibility of the business owner to take the appropriate prevention precautions in order to guarantee that a workplace adheres to all health and safety standards. All buildings must comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which addressed general fire safety measures for England and Wales.

Workplace premises are required to meet a minimum fire safety standard and it is the responsibility of the individuals at the premises to carry out regular risk assessments in order to identify and reduce the risk of fire.

The Order does not cover private properties but includes most buildings and structures. At CoreGenic, we can ensure that your business is compliant with the appropriate safety standards while also training staff on fire safety, so that appropriate checks can be made in the future.

We have recently worked with a number of companies and staff members in sharing the importance of fire safety in the workplace, and what standards need to be met.

Ensuring that your staff are fully trained can actually significantly reduce a company’s liability in cases of fire and also protect the business itself. Though the top priority in any case is to protect employee’s safety, fires can also have a significant detrimental effect on businesses through damage to buildings or loss of goods.

The comprehensive training that we offer covers several aspects of fire safety:

  • Identifying fire hazards
  • Emergency plans
  • Containing fires
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Fire prevention

Fire Safety Assessments

Within a fire safety assessment, we analyse the premises and identify fire exits, escape routes, staircases – essential areas of interest if a fire breaks out. We also ensure that there is adequate signs and notices for fire exits and equipment, and that the equipment and facilities are functional.

It is also part of the assessment to analyse the population of the organisation, any vulnerable persons, as well as evaluating the current fire detection and warning systems.

Part of our service is helping identify the consequences of fire and classification of risks, as well as appointing responsible and competent people within an organisation. Our previous blog discusses competent people in detail, which you can access here.

At CoreGenic, we offer a range of expert services to support the health and safety compliance of your organisation such as consultations, audits, project and site management, training and more.
