What Is SMSTS?

SMSTS is designed for people who have health & safety management responsibilities on a construction site.

What Does It Stand For?

SMSTS stands for the Site Management Safety Training Scheme. If you are a construction site manager currently and have responsibility for planning, organising, monitoring and controlling groups of staff on a construction site, this course will equip you with the in-depth knowledge and skills required to carry out the role effectively and in line with industry-wide standards.

The qualification is designed and accredited by one of the leading construction training bodies, CITB. It forms part of their Site Safety Plus (SSP) series of courses, designed to establish effective health and safety practices within the workplace.

What Does It Entail?

SMSTS is a 5 day course covering the health & safety and environmental issues that a construction site manager should understand as part of their role.

This includes relevant legislation, effective communication techniques on site, health & safety responsibility and culture as well as new guidelines and industry best practice.

At the end of the course, understanding is assessed with a 35 minute written exam including 25 questions (18 multiple choice and 7 short written answers). The pass mark for the exam is 81%.

All of the information required to pass the assessment will be provided throughout the duration of the course. Full attendance is therefore essential in order to obtain the appropriate knowledge and pass the course successfully.

After passing the assessment the learner will receive a certificate of completion. The qualification will also be visible using the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card checker.

Does It Expire?

Your SMSTS certificate will be valid for 5 years from the date of completion. In order to keep the accreditation you will need to complete a Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS-R) before the 5 years are up. The SMSTS-R is a condensed 2 day course designed to update site managers who have already completed the SMSTS within the last 5 years.

If the 2 day refresher course is not completed before your SMSTS certificate expires, you will need to complete the full 2 day course again. You can keep track of your qualification status using the CSCS card checker to ensure you don’t miss your expiry deadline.

Please Note: SMSTS courses are not for site supervisors. SMSTS courses provide more advanced and detailed knowledge, necessary for those with managerial responsibilities. If you are a site supervisor, the SSSTS course will likely be more suited to your responsibilities.
